Sturtevant -- An area organization dedicated to trade professionals is showing off its expertise by building its own office space.
The new home of the Racine-Kenosha Builders Association is under construction at 2700 Wisconsin St.
Sheree Hagen, chairman of the public relations committee for the 168-member association, said a permanent and very visible home will help both the general public and the membership.
"By having a permanent place, we can put a sign out so that builders know where to find the builders association, and where consumers can find us," Hagen said Monday.
Hagen said the expanded office space will allow for more educational programs and offer a central location where consumers can get information, including an up-to-date directory of area builders.
Work on the two-story building began with groundbreaking April 1. Rental space will be available in the new building, which is expected to be completed by fall.
The association is now housed at Perma-Structo Inc., 2450 Wisconsin St.
Hagen said more than 65% of the new building was made possible through the donations of materials, labor or both from association members.
Michelle Dawson, executive officer of the association, said that by having a building, the association can expand the educational programs it holds for members.
In addition to training opportunities on topics such as how to manage office staff, the association keeps its members informed about various changes in permit procedures, state and federal laws, and proposed law changes.
It also provides builders an opportunity to network.
"The association also does many things in the community," Dawson said.
